Acknowledging that vendors and IT professionals have to step into the breach to make computing more secure, Microsoft Tuesday launched two new security certifications and again pledged to make software patches easier to apply. Scott Charney, Microsoft’s chief security strategist, said Tuesday that he is working to adapt the company’s corporate culture to make patch application more uniform and rational.

I currently work at a mass merchandising corporate chain known as Wally World. If you have not heard of Wally World then you are lying, because you have. Besides the fact that I believe that I work for an evil corporate empire, Wally World is actually a pretty good place to work, despite a few setbacks from time to time. The reason I have posted a web site about my job is because Wally World happens to be a mecca for shoppers, and everyone is a shopper, especially stupid people. So basically, about everyone and their uncle who bought the same damn lawn mower at another Wally World for a cheaper price shops at Wally World.

A patent underlying one of the Web’s most popular graphics formats is set to expire later this month, raising the question of whether a rival, open format, created as a royalty-free alternative, will become obsolete.

The situation has also rekindled debate about patents, innovation and the freedom of communication.

In the United States, the patent for the Lempel-Ziv-Welch, or LZW, compression algorithm expires June 20. LZW forms the basis of the popular GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) design.

LZW patent owner Unisys said it has no plans to apply for an extension to the U.S. patent, or to patents in Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Italy – though it will enforce those latter patents for another year, until they too expire.
